Student Housing

Students participating in person on Isla Mujeres are housed in residential properties selected to support both daily living and field research. Housing is included in tuition for students participating on the island.

A Home Base for Fieldwork

IFS housing is generally located in the mid-island area, providing practical access to communities, research locations, restaurants, shops, transportation, and other parts of daily island life.

The goal is not to create a closed student residence or campus environment. Students live independently within Isla Mujeres while using their housing as a secure and practical base for research, writing, meetings, and everyday life.

Security and Local Management

Properties used by IFS have active local management that students can contact when assistance is needed. Security features may include gated entrances and individually secured rooms or units, depending on the property used for a particular cohort.

Housing arrangements vary by year and cohort size, so exact property features may differ. Final housing details are provided to accepted students before arrival.

A Recent IFS Housing Example

For the most recent cohort, students stayed at Casa Goleta, a residential property with a gated entrance and individually secured accommodations. The property also included a pool and patio area and a spacious rooftop with broad views across Isla Mujeres and the Caribbean Sea.

Casa Goleta is an example of recent IFS housing, not a guarantee that the same property or exact amenities will be used for future cohorts. Housing is selected according to availability, cohort size, location, security, and practical research needs.

What Housing Includes

On-island housing is included in IFS tuition for students participating in person on Isla Mujeres.

Food is not included. Students are responsible for groceries, restaurant meals, personal expenses, and other day-to-day costs.

Visitors and Student Housing

Family members and friends are not permitted to stay in student lodging during the course.

IFS is an independent academic and research experience, and visitors should arrange to travel to Isla Mujeres after the student’s academic program is complete

SPECIAL EXEMPTION: If a participant must travel with family, we can arrange for different housing for them as a unit. For example, in the past we have had single parenting mothers who have attended the program, but needed housing for herself and her children in order to participate in the program. We will make arrangements in these cases. Just let Dr. Pierce know, and we'll work it out. No worries.

The intent of this policy is to encourage independence in the field, but also for the benefit of the other students. Parents, for example, will not be allowed to enter student housing without special permission.
